  8. 1596 is the most likely date for The Merchant of Venice, for in that 
  9. year a wealthy Spanish ship was much in the news. The ship had run 
  10. aground in the harbour at Cadiz, where it was captured and brought to 
  11. England. It is this event that Salerio is referring to in Act 1, Scene 1, 
  12. lines 25û9:

  14.     I should not see the sandy hour-glass run
  15.     But I should think of shallows and of flats,
  16.     And see my wealthy Andrew dockÆd in sand
  17.     Vailing her high-top lower than her ribs 
  18.     To kiss her burial.

  20.     The earliest text of the play was the Quarto published in 1600, 
  21. and this is followed in the present edition.
