- THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
-
- Date and Text
-
- 1596 is the most likely date for The Merchant of Venice, for in that
- year a wealthy Spanish ship was much in the news. The ship had run
- aground in the harbour at Cadiz, where it was captured and brought to
- England. It is this event that Salerio is referring to in Act 1, Scene 1,
- lines 25û9:
-
- I should not see the sandy hour-glass run
- But I should think of shallows and of flats,
- And see my wealthy Andrew dockÆd in sand
- Vailing her high-top lower than her ribs
- To kiss her burial.
-
- The earliest text of the play was the Quarto published in 1600,
- and this is followed in the present edition.
